Apple is settling a class action lawsuit over Family Sharing for $25 million

According to a report by MacRumors, Apple is set to make settlement payments of up to $50 for those who used the Family Sharing feature with another user and bought an app subscription via App Store between 2015-2019. This payout is expected to exceed $25 million as part of their response agreement in regards to a class action lawsuit that claimed Apple provided misleading information about Family Sharing features.

The feature allows a total of six family members to share app subscriptions, but developers can choose to limit sharing for individual subscribers. However, in 2019, Apple faced legal action claiming they misled consumers by not disclosing this information and suggesting that all App Store apps could be shared via subscriptions. The lawsuit asserts that most subscription-based applications are allegedly capable of supporting Family Sharing functionality.

The complaint alleges that Apple placed advertisements on subscription-based app landing pages which did not support Family Sharing. This resulted in numerous customers downloading these apps under false pretenses, mistakenly believing they would be included in their Family Sharing plan. Among the culprits were YouTube Red and Brainwell puzzle game, both of which falsely advertised the ability to share subscriptions with family members or groups as alleged by the complainant.

Reports suggest that Apple has refused any wrongdoing and opted to resolve the case to evade potential costs associated with a jury trial. The company did not respond to Engadget's inquiry for comment.
