Teen who leaked Grand Theft Auto VI sentenced to indefinite stay in "secure hospital," report says

According to a BBC report, an 18-year-old hacker who leaked footage of the unreleased video game Grand Theft Auto VI has been sentenced by a British judge to indefinite detention in a secure hospital.

Arion Kurtaj, the notorious hacker, released 90 sneak peeks of Rockstar Games' highly anticipated release Grand Theft Auto VI while also orchestrating cyberattacks on tech giants Uber and Nvidia as well as various other corporations. In August, a British court found Kurtaj and his accomplice (a young member of hacking collective Lapsus$) guilty for charges involving hacking techniques such as fraudulence and extortion.

CBS MoneyWatch's request for comment on the breach was left unanswered by Rockstar Games.

According to BBC, the judge overseeing Kurtaj's case determined that he must be kept under custody in a secure medical facility until mental healthcare experts confirm that he no longer poses any danger to society. As per doctors' evaluations, they found Kurtaj unsuitable for prosecution due to his severe autism.

According to The Guardian's report, there are 60 secure mental health hospitals in England and Wales that combine psychiatric care with custody. These institutions function as residential treatment centers aimed at rehabilitating offenders and discharging them eventually. In comparison to prisons, they are perceived as less severe.

Amongst the 60 medium-secure mental health hospitals in England and Wales, Guild Lodge accommodates individuals who are considered a threat to either themselves or others due to their mental illness.

According to Bloomberg, in court on Thursday this week, the judge stated that Kurtaj's expertise in obtaining unrestricted access to computers presents a significant threat of causing severe harm to society.

According to the BBC report, Kurtaj managed to conduct a Grand Theft Auto hack even though he had his laptop seized while on bail awaiting sentencing for prior cyberattacks. He used an Amazon Fire TV Stick, a hotel television and his phone to breach the company's internal messaging system. He threatened Rockstar by writing that if they didn't contact him within 24 hours via Telegram, he would release their source code. The broadcaster stated that shortly afterwards, he publicly posted both the code and video game clips online.

There is no doubt that GTA 6 ranks as one of the most eagerly awaited video game launches in history. Within a mere twenty-four hours after Rockstar uploaded its trailer, it had already amassed an astounding sixty million views on YouTube. The exact release date for this much-anticipated title has been slated sometime in 2025.
